Halloween History

According to legend Trick-or-treating came from the the ancient Celtic tradition of placing treats out to appease spirits/ ghosts who roamed the streets during Samhain. A sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic harvest season and the beginning of winter (October 31).

Current cultures have definitely evolved from the days of Samhain festivals. We now pass out candy to children of all ages clad in cute costumes. My boys are teens now and although I no longer have to purchase them costumes they still look forward to receiving more candy than they should eat in a year's time. We are lucky to live in walking distance of the Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit. Every year the seminary hosts a Halloween party for the community. My teen sons, their friends and anyone in the community is welcomed and encouraged to attend. It is a safe and secure place where kids can feel free to be kids again.
