5 Crafty Organization Tricks

The craft room is an amazing place. You can be your own person, let creative juices flow and become consumed in that next project. However, once you begin searching for needed materials, the excitement of getting started on your craft can quickly dissolve. Don't let that original thrill be replaced with an agonizing search for needed supplies. Use these simple organization tricks to keep that original idea fresh. Pull out the necessary craft-making items with ease, and stay focused on the project at hand.

Clutter Spells Catastrophe

Designating a spot in your craft room for material, yarn and thread is a good way to start with becoming organized, but don't stop there. For example, a big box or basket that contains a mixture of material and sewing notions still requires digging. You may think that there is a spool of bright pink thread in that pile, but then again, maybe not. Small notions need to be in plain sight to avoid searching. If this whole organization thing is new to you, start out slow by covering one wall with pegboard. Paint it to match your room and add pegs for clear basket holders. Only place like items in each holder so they are in plain sight.

Clear Jars are not just for Screws

Take a trip to your husband's shop and you may find an organizational tip that was right under your nose. Clear screw-on jars are perfect for keeping nuts and bolts separated and visible when the lid is attached to the underside of a shelf. You can see what each container holds and access is easy by unscrewing the lid. Use an attractive wooden shelf that is long enough to hold at least 6 jars. Baby jars or glass spice jars are perfect for holding beads, buttons and more. Just don't let your husband know where you got the idea.

Make a Work Station

How many times have you started a project and found that many of your supplies end up on the floor for lack of room? Having adequate space is a must for being creative and an interior door is the perfect size. Pick up a couple of 2-drawer file cabinets to use for the base. You will be surprised at the amount of working space that is created. Use the file cabinets for patterns, craft books, pencils and markers.

Where are the Scissors?

Have you ever noticed how a pair of scissors always seem to grow legs and walk away? Cover a magnetic knife strip with colorful material and place on the wall directly above your work area. You will never search for the right pair of scissors again.

Stacked Plastic Crates

Larger items, like material, construction paper, manuals and yarn, can find a neat home in a corner when stacked plastic crates are used. Collect old license plates and cover with construction paper to mark each container in bold print of the contents. Or use a color code system with a different colored crate for organized items.It does not require a lot of time or money to turn your craft area into a workable space. Make a list of all of your items (and how many times they have been misplaced) and start designing your craft room. You will be amazed at how simple it is to go directly to needed materials and to keep your train of thought on that exciting project.
